Beyond the ordinary.

Growing up in a place so culturally active as Tanzania, you become very aware of the importance of expression. I was always pushed to express myself through ways that did not always involve words. I believe that not all words can describe every situation which is why i choose to express myself through my art. 

The first five years of my life, I lived isolated together with my mother on the foothills of mount Meru , a place called Oldonyo Sambu.  where sometimes we would go days and even weeks without seeing another human being. Because of the isolation my night lullabies were filled with the sounds of hyenas in the not so vast distance and my days consisted of walking around hoping to find a kind enough Maasai who would let me play with his herd of goats. My mother had spent 16 year on top of the mountain before we had to move to a more populated area because of my schooling.  Throughout the years on the mountain, my mother taught me a valuable lesson; being able to feel comfortable in your own company. To not always seek that comfort in others but instead strengthen it in yourself. And it is in this time, where i seek company in myself, that i create my best art. This idea of seeking comfort in your own company, has shaped the person I am today and it will shape the person I will become tomorrow. 

What I want to achieve through my art?

What started as a glimpse into my own mind has now become a reflection of the things outside of it. I hope that the reflection I create, is one that my viewers have seen standing before them so that they know they aren't alone. That is why I have decided to call these pieces as a collective whole, Mwangwi. which in kiswahili, the native language of tanzania means resonance.
